Before I forget, this book omits one of the most important rules of chess: The board must be turned so that each player has a white square in his lower right corner. That’s a rule. If the board is turned so you have a black square there, you are playing mirror chess, and the openings and strategies you learned on the white square orientation won’t work.While this bookwill teach you how to play chess, it seems to me to a bit wordy, and in my opinion makes learning the game harder than necessary for a beginner.It opens with an unnecessary introduction about the history of the game. This is followed by a rather tedious chapter on chess notation – how to write down chess moves if you wish to record a game, play by mail, or replay the games of chess masters. It is not necessary to know chess notation to play the game, and it is curious that they teach this first. The book advises: “If you’re feeling confident in your understanding of chess notation at this point, that’s excellent. If it hasn’t stuck yet, don’t worry.”Finally, the book says to get better at chess you need to practice: “You may see results faster by playing more, but no matter how much time you dedicate, you’re sure to improve if only you stick to it.” Personally, my experience is that one improves quickest through study. Learn as many openings as you can, so that you are familiar with them and know how to respond to an opponent’s opening moves. And master the principles of Middle and End-Game play, which are touched on here.I’m not familiar with recent chess literature, but years ago learned the game from Fred Reinfeld’s “Introduction to Chess.” That’s no longer in print, but is included in his The Complete Chess Course available on Amazon. I would prefer that, and suggest you buy the hard copy rather than Kindle edition. For a cheaper alternative, this book in the Kindle edition will do the job but is a little less fun.
