I am a fan of Russell Brand and after reading My Booky Wook, became an even bigger fan. His voice is infused throughout its pages, making it impossible to read without hearing Brand's actual voice - its cadence and tone - in one's own mind. Reading his words is very much like listening to him in an interview or comedy routine.It is hard for many to be so brutally honest, and this is something I enjoy about Brand's storytelling and humor. He doesn't hold back, doesn't try to make things palatable for the masses, doesn't pretend to be someone he's not. While some may find his antics to be off-putting, it made me like him more. How much better would life be if everyone were as authentic? It may be a bit more disturbing, but certainly more enjoyable.He seems to hold nothing back as he brings the reader through his journey from a challenging childhood, battles with addiction, and emerging to the other side. Many who would follow on a similar path would not have the fortitude (of body or mind) to achieve the success Brand has enjoyed (success in that he is alive to tell the tale, all neurons firing). There were certainly parts that were difficult to read, but his honesty as a fallible human is truly refreshing... which is sad because we are all imperfect, but reluctant to let others know those imperfections.This is a book I will read again and strongly recommend. If you're a Brand fan, it will only make you like him more. No judgement.
